Vehicles used to transport livestock must comply with basic building requirements.
Each trailer or vehicle must:
- Be constructed and maintained in a manner that ensures the safety of animals during loading, transport and unloading
- Protect animals from injury, unnecessary suffering, inclement weather and excessive noise and vibration
- Avoid sharp edges, protrusions, gaps and spaces that could cause injury
A – Loading ramp with footrest
B – Side door, minimum 1.3m
C – Footrest and/or non-slip flooring throughout the floor
D – Internal partitions, minimum 1.27m for cattle and 76cm for pigs, sheep and calves
E – Adequate lighting to facilitate stock inspection
F – Floor height must allow animals to stand naturally and provide adequate ventilation
G – Loading ramp slope not exceeding 29°
H – Top step of ramp not exceeding 21cm and gap not greater than 6cm
J – Internal ramp slope not exceeding 33°
K – Good ventilation on all levels
M – Roof
N – No large gaps between internal partitions and floor
